The Sumerian language is one of the earliest known written languages. The "proto-literate" period of Sumerian writing spans c. 3300 to 3000 BC. In this period, records are purely logographic, with phonological content.

The following is a list of the kings of Babylonia (ancient southern-central Iraq), compiled from the traditional Babylonian king lists and modern archaeological findings. The corresponding total for the Sumerian King List (using the reign-lengths 12 in Table 1) is 277,200 years, so the difference in totals between the early and late sources may be as little as 39%, and is certainly no greater than 56%.
